I just ran into a case of the iPhone getting stuck in the bootup screen, displaying the Apple logo forever. This is apparently a well known issue, perhaps having something to do with App Store installations and SpringBoard data getting corrupted.
Anyway, a quick round of Google resulted mostly in guides for restoring the iPhone, but then I ran into this little piece of advice at Ars and it actually worked without having to restore.
Thought I'd post it here in case someone runs into the problem - you might want to give it a shot first.
Edit: Be sure to check Nodnarb's posts below before you begin.

I'm trying this right now... hope this works. I've been going for about 10 min, and I'm getting the vibrating of the phone, and iTunes/iPhoto occasionally recognizing it... but no apple logo dimming to know when to restart it... hmmm...
I'll let you know if it works. Thanks for the tips anyways... this is a pain in the ass problem that I really hope apple fixes soon.

Ok well I got through to the home screen finally...
But then when it resynced, it seems like it installed fresh versions of all my apps... again.
So now, for example, the Car Care app has lost all my previous fillups... brainage has lost all my previous records... and etc etc etc.
This is the 3rd time since I got the new iPhone that i've had to start from square one with apps like these.
Even with how great the appstore is, I'm starting to sorely miss 1.1.4.

And that's where the issue appears to be. This, from what I am reading, appears to be a problem exclusive to people who have downloaded and installed a great many apps from the app store. If you just use your iPhone the way it came out of the box it seems to be as stable as anything.
This will make me think twice about installing any additional applications unless there's a fix available.
