I've been wanting an iphone ever since they were announced in June. Couldn't get one in July when they came out because I had to wait for upgrade eligibility, which was Aug. 1. So, vacation done, I tried to buy one last week at an Apple store. Couldn't do it, b/c my husband's name is the primary and he wasn't with me. Grrrr... ("Do you know how many times I've bought phones without him," I asked the salesperson. It was no go, b/c that was at a Cingular store, not at Apple.) So, Friday, we tried again. Had husband with me, had already added my name to the account anyway and got ... stymied once again. That's because the eligibility was on one of my daughter's phones, not mine. This time my response was, "but we swap eligibility all the time!" -- we have 4 lines. The sales person, who was very nice by the way, was sympathetic but firm. We called AT&T from the store and the person essentially said, go to an AT&T store.

Of course, they don't have any, so I went to go order one yesterday. Not only had they just gotten them in stock, they were easily able to swap out the numbers and eligibility. And the icing on the cake? This is a corporate store, not the one I usually use -- but only about a half mile from the first store. And the corporate store offers a 15 percent discount on monthly service to employees of local governments, which my husband is. So not only did I get my new phone, we also are now saving 15% on monthly service. And since I had to increase my minutes, with 2 kids now in college, this will be a welcome savings.

Now I just have to play with my new phone... And get a case for it -- I didn't like the ones at the store and I'm worried about scratches.

Oh, I forgot to add ...

The moral of the story is, as far as I'm concerned, go to Apple to buy computers and ipods. But go to a phone store to get a phone. It was a lot smoother.

My experience was much the opposite. I had a much smoother process buying my iphone at an Apple Retail store. The corporate AT&T store was a bunch of jumping through hoops, personal questions that weren't needed (avg. income - I refused to answer), and then hard sales on accessories and additional lines. At the Apple Store i was in and out in 10 minutes.
