This new 3G iphone is terrible when it comes to being a PHONE. I sure do love all the gizmos it has, but it has been dropping phone calls 6-7 times a day. My old iPhone never use to drop calls. What's going on? I've read a lot online about millions of others have trouble as well. Maybe it's Apple, maybe it's AT&T, maybe it's a microchip. Who knows....but what i do know is that it's totally unusable. My boyfriend was using my 3G phone to dial into a conference call and he had to re-dial in 4 times during a 20 minute call. He's so embarrassed.

I switch the 3G off most of the time, since i never really use Safari or any other 3G function other than e-mail and and on 2.5G it works perfectly. If and when i need some speed i can switch it back on.

What has resulted is a much more reliable phone with better signal strength. I recall having issues with my old Nokia Phone with 3G, having as many lost or dropped calls as i get now.

It's not a solution for the people that need 3G speed but can be for the ones that don't.
I know that the overall functionality of the phone outweighs the problems i get when on 3G
if you can't be part of the solution don't be part of the problem!!!!

It's a combination of AT&T's network capacity and Apple's buggy radio power management. AT&T claims it will be OK once everyone upgrades to 2.0.2, which improves the radio power management.

Of the 3 iPhone 2.5G users (all of whom absolutely loved their iPhones) I know who upgraded to the 3G, one has returned it to go back to his 2.5G, one waited too long to return it and they refused to reactivate his old phone so he went with a Nokia, and one is happily still using the 3G.

I hope there's a decent update today.

For a 3G iPhone, there's not much 3G-ing going on, always on edge.

I was a VERY happy user of the 2.5 for a full year.

Now I leave 3G turned off, and plug the phone in every chance I get - keeping a charger at my desk at work- here's to hoping the update Friday helps.....

I turn off 3G unless I need it. It increases call quality by having a stronger signal. Usually, I use web stuff over a wireless network.

That will kill your battery capacity over time. Calibrate your battery by letting the iPhone run until it switches itself off. Then let it deep recharge over night. Do that three times and your battery life should increase dramatically. I go for three days without recharge on normal 3G use.

Honestly, most of the iPhone users i know aren't concerned about battery life. In 1 year Apple will announce a new, slimmer, sleeker, faster, better new iPhone and you'll upgrade even if it doesn't include many new featurs. Just like you did with the original. You have to have the newest/latest/greatest........plus, your 3G phone will look old and scratched up. You have to admit, the 3G speed increase isn't all it's cracked up to be and the old iPhone software now allows apps too.

So i say charge your phone every day...all day.....who cares. it only has to last 1 year.

You've got this completely wrong. I am not talking about the lifetime of your battery, I am talking about usable battery capacity.

In that case, disregard my post.

But just to touch up what my point was. It's different when buying a computer which costs thousands of dollars. Those you keep long term.

But for a $199 phone, in a year if you want a new one....you just get it.

No you won't. In a year's time, if you want a new iPhone, chances are your carrier will charge you full price for it. You don't qualify for the full upgrade discount every time you want a new phone - your telco would lose their shirt that way.

The retail price for the iPhone is somewhere around $750, and that's the price you'll likely pay if you decide to upgrade in 12 months time.

Installed iPhone software version 2.1. 100% snappier. Backing up, installing apps, general use. What i don't know yet is if my phone is any better as acting as a phone.

only time will tell.
