Photos sync'd from the computer have to be done that way -- exactly the same way as music in the iPod portion of the iPhone. Photos you take can of course be deleted on the phone.

That sucks. Is there a file manager that can let me do this?

My only gripe with the phone is that it seems due to the APP store that I will have to pay money to due things that regular phones naturally do, ie delete photos.

I'm curious how you want the behavior to work. Do you want to delete a photo from the phone and then have it be deleted the next time you sync?
It seems consistent in that content you can add remotely you can remove remotely (apps and camera photos), but content like videos, photos, and music that must be synced must be removed the same way.
I guess I am always in favor of having more options, but this has never even crossed my mind as necessary.

Good point and question Ssharon.
Exact reason why I posted this thread: My wife synced her phone with her MBP. For whatever reason, she had multiple copies of certain pics. By the time she noticed, she was on the road, no computer available. And she wanted to simply delete the unnecessary photos.
I understand your thoughts on it possibly deleting photos upon a sync, but a simple prompt asking whether or not to do would handle that.
It's not a function I'll die without, but it is very basic and I would at least like the option to remove photos from the phone without the aid of a computer.

If it's a picture that you've taken, you can delete it. It is a little silly that you can delete movies, but not pictures.

which reminds me that my earlier post is mistaken in that you can delete videos and without even watching them (or opening them and scrolling to the end) first. so I guess it isn't consistent.
The more I think about it, the more I have to agree that you should be able to delete photos in the same way you can delete contacts and you get a prompt the next time you sync.
