I own an iphone 3G and love it. However, this newly announced HTC Touch HD seems very interesting—and good looking. The release date in the U.S. hasn’t been announced yet but it sports a slightly bigger screen with a high resolution. If it has copy/paste and flash could this be the first serious competitor for the iphone? Who needs a special youtube app when you can just go to the website and watch the video directly?

Darn. I know a lot of people hate flash-saying they would rather not see ad banners and that it slows down the browser--which I can understand. I support it being an option.

However, the sad reality is that its the standard right now. If a comparable phone gets it and implements it well--and can also support many of the other features currently found only on the iphone--what will most people choose? The iphone that shows some web content but makes you *buy* TV episodes on itunes or another web-enabled phone that allows you to watch those same episodes (sometimes in HD) on a flash site like Hulu for free?

It looks pretty decent. It has a four things I wish my iPhone had:

1) higher resolution camera
2) video recording
3) flash ( the internet kind for veoh, hulu, language study, fun, etc...)
4) storage expansion

Serious competition imo.

Its based on Windows Mobile® 6.1, how could this be a serious competitor for the iPhone? You must be kidding. Have you ever used a phone based on this piece of crap?

Yes, I have. Feature wise, the iPhone is somewhat lacking when compared to business phones that can also blend/chop/mix.
But the beauty of the iPhone is in it's OS and physical form.

Everyone has their personal list of needs. Right now the iphone is the best out there for me personally. However, I'll be watching to see if this HTC holds its own. I'm growing a little resentful of Apple's closed systems that make you pay for content which is free elsewhere--and which by default censor what material you can view.

I think they have to put flash on the iphone. A lot of windows based mobile phone already have flash. There are tons of flash based videos on the net that I couldn't watch because Steve Jobs simply doesn't like flash. And the camera is just 2 megapixel. The standard nowadays is 5 with video recording. I might just dispose of my iphone to a better one...

While we all wish the camera in an iPhone was slightly better, more megapixels actually makes the quality worse, not better. Flash? Meh, as a web developer I am glad to be rid of it.

The real crutch of this otherwise nicely speced phone is twofold:

a) Windows Mobile. It's crap. Period. No ifs. No buts. HTC tries to put a custom UI on it, but as we all know: You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig…
b) Pressure sensitive screen. Capacity resistance screens and pressure sensitive screens are night and day. Forget about multitouch, hello stylus!
