Hi all, not being an SMS user (refuse to pay for it), I've been anxiously awaiting background notification and was dissapointed it was not in 2.1. However I see BeeJiveIM (iTunes link) says it stays connected and has notification when the app is closed.

I have not dropped $15 on it yet, and may not since apparently BN is coming in 2.2, but I am considering this. Has anyone gotten it? Does it work as advertised? How does it work? I see it says it requires MobileMe (or exch push). Any info?

Thanks.

I don't know how that would be possible. Apple's SDK does not provide such a feature (yet).

Edit:
App info states:

Be connected even after you close the application. Get notified instantly when you get a new message (requires with(sic!) MobileMe or Exchange/ActiveSync push email.)
So, this what they do: when you close the app, you stay signed in on their server. Once you get a message, they will send you an email, which is pushed to your iPhone in the background.

What a load of bull.

That crossed my mind that it would be via email, but that is so lame I almost immediately dimissed it. Can anyone that has this app confirm?

Read the comments on that app. Many people state that this is how it works.

Yes, this is how it works and it works well. It's currently the only way for an IM client to get iPhone users notifications of messages while they have the app closed. Once Apple opens up background push notifications I'm sure that every IM app will switch to using it, but until that happens there simply is no better system available.
