Can you update firmware without a home internet connection?

I never thought about this but is there a way to actually update your iPhone 3G firmware either manually or without iTunes? A coworker has an iPhone but with the old firmware. She doesn't have a home internet connection anymore (can't remember the long story) but does this mean she needs to haul her home computer to a family or friends house just to update her iPhone?
If so...

Why can't she do it from work or a friend's connection?

I don't know, can you actually do it manually in that sense without your iTunes doing the downloading etc?

I think you should be able to upgrade from any computer, although I don't know how backups are handled on foreign computers.

You need to use iTunes and that would mean activating her iTunes account on someone else's computer which is quite a security risk don't you think? That and the fact that her back-ups would be accessible on that computer too.
She can do it, but it won't be very secure so she will need to trust her friend completely. If it were me in that situation, I would ask the friend to create a new account that can be securely deleted afterwards. Also, I would make sure to deactivate iTunes for that phone on that computer once I was done.

Yes, it can be done quite easily.

Eh I did a quick search but there are so many links on reviews of the 2.1 update. Anyway, I was just checking for her since she didn't know what to do and I had no idea either (I guess I take my cable modem access for granted sometimes). I'll just tell her she's SOL and will have to drag her computer to her friends house to connect to their internet.
