iPhone: All contacts disappeared - and calendar too!

I noticed today that all my calendar items have disappeared on my iPhone. I checked my contacts, they were there but hey presto, they disappeared before my eyes.

I linked my phone to my iMac and synchronised. It says it's finished, but my iPhone is still blank. Won't the iPhone sync without Mobile Me?

I used to have mobile me, but I found it really buggy. It was like there was 2 versions of it under my name e.g. I always had to sign on twice to get Mobile Me to log me in.
