If you hit "send" and it tells you the message couldn't be sent, it goes to your outbox and will be sent the next time the iPhone can connect to that SMTP server. AFAIK there's no way to remove a message from that outbox; it's hidden from the UI.

You should be able to use any email in your phone's contact list to send emails. What are you having problems doing?

That happened to me. I had an email in my phone since Nov. that wouldn't go away. Upgrading to 2.2.1 fixed it.

Is it an issue with your outgoing mail server? My gf had a similar problem with her iPhone and it turned out to be related to using the outgoing server provided by our home ISP. As soon as I changed the settings to use our Wireless provider's outgoing server the problem went away completely.

I take back what I said about no outbox. I had an email get stuck trying to send from a Gmail account, and an Outbox showed up in the folder list - I was able to delete the email.

This may, of course, be part of the latest software update, and may only be limited to IMAP accounts (as opposed to Exchange or other push accounts, like Yahoo).
