Video playback support on the iPhone

I dont own an iPhone..yet, but am getting o the point where i need a new phone. I just wanted to clarify if video playback support on the iPhone is limited to Apple's supported formats ?
Is there an App on the iPhone(locked), like VLC, where you can play DivX/Xvid formated videos ?
