I know that you really shouldn't run with a classic or any hd based pmp but how is it if your just mowing the lawn? Or walking down stairs with it in a pocket/in hand? Do these light bumps to them hurt it that much? I would assume it would quite a bit due to the hard drive. I was talking this over with a friend and he said it wouldn't very well.

I've run with mine, though I haven't tried mowing my grass with it. I suspect that if you keep the vibrations down to a minimum you should be ok

It'd be kind of silly to buy an iPod and only use it when you're sitting still. It withstands normal use quite well- the problem is when it's repeatedly jerked around like when you're running.
