Hello fellow iPod Users,
I currently use a 120 gig iPod Classic in iTunes, OSX 10.5.7. Last evening, I noticed that my iPod would, upon initial connection, sync, then self-eject without receiving a command to do so. Further, after spending an hour with an Apple tech support agent, the agent determined that my iPod should be replaced, and set up an appointment for me to visit a local Mac Genius. However, at the appointment the Mac Genius stated that this behavior is normal and proved it by pulling out a brandnew iPod, connecting to my Macbook Pro, and replicating the same behavior as my iPod, i.e. the iPod would self eject w/o command. I honestly do not remember this happening before. So, my question is, is this normal iPod behavior?

I would greatly appreciate input from experienced iPod users on this question.

Thanks!

Does the behavior change if you enable disk use?

Hello Simon,
I just woke up; sorry for the late response. I am ignorant of "disk use." I know that with the Apple tech support agent we put the iPod in "disk mode" (a check mark with the words "disk use" or " disk mode" appeared; However, this did nothing to change the iPod from ejecting. Also, as I mentioned, the Mac Genius pulled out a brand new iPod, connected it to my Macbook Pro, and the same thing happened which is why he did not replace my iPod which is still under warranty (and has a two year Apple Care Plan).

Disk use refers to mounting the iPod on the desktop to use as an external hard disk. If disk use is disabled in iTunes, the iPod can be immediately undocked after syncing without the warning message about first ejecting the disk.

Hello ibook_steve and thank you for responding. I will check this tonight and determine whether disk use is disabled or not. Unfortunately, I am not able to do it right now because I am at work today until 11 p.m. PST, so, I will respond to you tomorrow and let you know what I found out. I am grateful to you for responding because no one else after Simon did, so I was just going to call tech support. Anyway, thanks so much for your information, and I will respond to you tomorrow once I am able to implement a fix.

Take Care

Hello ibook_steve,
I'm sorry I haven't written sooner, but I've been working double shifts and have had zero time to work on this until this p.m. How/where do I disable/enable "disk use." I have not been able to locate this feature. I went to the iTunes Preferences and looked under
"Devices." I saw the "Disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods" feature. This box was unchecked. Am I in the correct are to enable/disable "disk use"? Or, does this feature reside elsewhere?

Thanks

When you dock or plug in your iPod, select your iPod from the list on the left (if it didn't automatically select it when you connected). The option is right there on the first settings page where you see the picture of your iPod.

Hi ibook_steve,
I found the "disk use" feature just where you said it would be and checked it. My iPod is now syncing. It is going to take a while as my iPod was wiped clean two days ago, and the sync is putting all my music from my laptop's hd back onto the drive. I am going to close for tonight. But, in the morning I will give you an update and advise you on how it all went.
Thanks for your help. I value it greatly.

Good morning Steve,
Your solution worked beautifully! Shame on Apple iPod Tech Support and shame on the Apple Mac Genius who both gave me incorrect advice, especially sine I paid $59 for the phone support via the two-year Apple Care for iPod protection plan. Thanks so much Steve for your most accurate and excellent advice. You knocked this one right out of the park! Apple, you struck out!
