I was starting to think there was something wrong with my iPhone; I couldn't get it to set up a Gmail account (the only one I tried). On a whim, I turned off the WiFi, and BINGO! It worked.

What is up with that? Is there a setting I need to adjust or something? A port in my home WiFi system to change or open?

On your computer, through wifi, try open Terminal and:
telnet imap.gmail.com 993
telnet imap.gmail.com 587

On the iPhone maybe tell it to forget the network, rejoin it and try again. Very strange that it wouldn't connect over wifi, since outgoing access is normally left open.

Those commands both work fine. I also have an IMAP Gmail account ON this computer that goes fine either wired or wirelessly.

And NOW I can send and receive via that account, even though I couldn't set it up (or at least couldn't get iPhone Mail to confirm the connection settings) a couple of hours ago. Hummmmmmmm. I hate conundrums.

I guess this thread is moot now, since it works. I just wish it hadn't been such a pain earlier.
