hi All,

Way back when, I had an app on my Palm (vi, I think it was), and then another on my Psion, that would securely store various bits of data (e.g. passwords, card numbers, codes etc).

I see many options at the App store, and I'm looking for some recommendations (one thing I really liked about program I had for my Palm was that there was a desktop counterpart, and the two would sync).

Any favorites?

Cheers!

Hands down, there's only one truly AWESOME passwords app for the Mac:

1Password
  • works with Safari, Firefox and other browsers
  • Mac desktop app
  • syncs to iPhone ($ 5)
  • syncs between multiple Macs
  • great and responsive developers

I have to say, it's truly the *one* app I couldn't live without.

cool, thanks for the recommendation, I'll check it out! (I've searched at the app store on "confidential", which didn't turn this app up. The developer needs to work on his keywording :-)

Cheers!

1Password is OK but it's implementation of WebKit is much slower than Safari or any other browser and it crashes often. I'm not terribly impressed by it, to be honest but it is useful to have.

There's also an inexpensive app called Firebox (iTunes link, dev web page). It works well here.

@JKT: thanks for that info. Given that you're not that impressed with WebKit, do the other password managers run on the same platform? (if yes, then I might as well get 1Password :-)

I've seen an app called "TapPad", which looks to be an extensible flat database. I might check that out too (if it can be encrypted, of course!).

Cheers!

Are you talking about the iPhone app's browser that opens and fills in the password automatically ?

That whole concept is being changed right now, there's going to be direct support into Mobile Safari.

The problem is that there currently is no better solution for the iPhone, as far as storing passwords and opening websites with automatic fill-in.

Woth iPhone OS 2.1, there are no other ways, because Mobile Safari doesn't allow plugins. So using webkit was the only solution.

However, with the new OS 3.0, there seems to be a new method using "bookmarklets".
They also seem to be working on a different integration for their iPhone Pro app, but I'm not quite sure yet how it works.

iCab mobile works better than 1password for me for browsing and password entry. However, 1password is useful for storing secure notes too which is what I mainly use it for now.

@chasg - WebKit is great, it is the implementation in 1password that isn't. If they updated it so the performance was better I would be much happier with it.

Good info guys, thanks!

One tap logins sounds pretty cool, but not all that useful when browsing with a computer (I was used to just plain 'ole password storage back in the old Palm/Psion days). I'd just like something that'll store lots, easy to find, well laid out, and will sync with a desktop app (much easier to type on a real keyboard than on an iPhone, landscape keyboard notwithstanding!).

oops, that app I mentioned isn't "tap pad", it's "tap forms database", and it does offer encryption :-)
