Here's a strange one....

I have an old 5G iPod (30GB) that still works normally for audio, photos, contacts, calendar games, etc. But, if I try to play a video (movie, TV show, music video, or podcast), the screen will go black, the white triangle play indicator will appear for a sec in the upper left, and the click wheel will apparently work to control volume, but there will be no audio and no video. When I try to click the menu, play/pause or ffw or rew buttons, the unit will hang, and need to be reset.

I've tried restoring the unit several times, using older firmware as well as the current, with no luck.

About the only thing I have NOT done, is reformat the unit for use with Windows. I may try firing up VMWare this evening and see if I have any luck with that.

Any other tips or tricks would be appreciated!

Thanks!

That is strange. Are you sure it's not a problem with the particular video files you're trying to play?

Pretty sure. Some of the content is home-grown (HandBrake and/or VisualHub), but other stuff is straight from the iTunes Store.

I am having the same problem with my iPod, everything works fine except for movies and podcasts, (even the slideshows work for photos). I have done all the diagnostic tricks I can find, (placing iPod in disk mode, menu/previous buttons for diagnostic mode, reset, restore, etc.) and still no luck. Apple support wants $129 to look at it, not sure I want to invest that much more. Any help anyone can offer would be much appreciated.
