Hi There

I currently have an iPhone 3g with Fido as my carrier and have purchased the voicemail package.
How does one setup visual voicemail?

Mine simply acts as a normal phone where you click the voicemail icon, dials and it simply takes you to "enter your access code" and your voicemail is there, nothing visual
nothing close to this:

Also, I only get a text message when I have voicemail not the red "ball" like object on the call symbol.

I do not have the "setup" icon on the voicemail
so i cannot do this:

Thanks

You need to set up your voicemail. This took me by surprise too. You need to go into Settings to get started. Here are Apple's instructions on how to do this. it's amazingly simple to do.

under settings --> phone, i've only got my number, call forwarding, call waiting, show my caller ID and SIM PIN, not voicemail

under the phone icon ---> voicemail, it simply dials to the voicemail and doesn't allow me to change anything only my greetings and password.

i've got OS 3 on it if that helps

Also when i call my own number and proceed to the setup, it simply says the number is invalid

Under Phone you should have: My Number, International Assist (on/off), and a section for calls (call forward, waiting, etc.) Scroll up. Directly under the calls section you'll see a button for Voicemail.

I still cannot find it.

When i go to "settings" >>"phone" the only settings i have are: "my number" calls: "call forwarding", "call waiting", "Show my caller ID", "SIM PIN" and finally "fido iPhone Page"

thats all, nothing else

I would contact Fido, see what they say. It may be that they haven't activated VVM on your account?

Just throwin that out there.

I had a similar problem with O2 here in the UK. They had to reset it at their end (switched it off then back on again). Only after this could I then set up visual voice mail.

There's definitely something wrong there, mkerr64. Get with your carrier-in person if possible-and see what they can do. It's NOT a hardware problem, and it's not a phone problem, therefore it's THEIR problem.

I went to Fido today and they said simply to call FIdo customer support. Also i went to the Apple store and they said the same thing.

I called Fido and they reset my voicemail and now it works.

But.....
I called my iPhone and left a message and no message is under the visual aspect. If I dial my own cell phone #, the messages are there

after being on the phone with Fido for 2 hours the problem was software. First they removed and placed back the voicemail and that didnt work. after restoring it and resetting the network preferences it finally came back to life.

still in the same situation

update:

After using the phone for about 30 min, the same problem was there. soooooo, i called them again for another 2 hours and they still have no idea what the problem is. so they said they are going to call me today and tell me whats going on with the voicemail.

So in the very end they told me that the issue was that my iphone wasnt receiving the correct information and it was related to my APN. They said they could not fix it and were not willing to give me a new one. so i googled it and found how to resolve the problem. i found this website: Unlockit - APN Changer for your iPhone
and all it does is change the APN of your phone, and it worked, after it took Fido a couple of months to figure out the problem.

what i did:
website
custom apn
fido.internet.ca= username
fido = password

Wow. That was, uh...easy? After all the waiting and fuss, which made it a pain, of course. Geeeeeeeezzzzzzzeeeee! They wouldn't just help you out if it was THAT straightforward? What a looser of a company.
