Apple sells roughly 10 million ipods a quarter. That's 40M in a year.
If 0.05% of them have a battery issue that will cause them to melt or burn, that is 20,000 iPods per year that will have a "thermal event" (as we say in the automotive industry). Not small potatoes, but still rare.

One in a million would still be 40 of them per year. I have owned 6 (counting shuffles and iPhones) and it hasn't happened to me yet.

I'm a bird. I am the 1% (of pets).

While I agree that the number is small, don't forget that 0.05% equals 500 ppm, which is not an acceptable quality result for most automotive applications. 1 ppm however, would be by most standards considered very high quality.

BUT: cars also have greater potential to kill than iPods, so a comparison is a little off kilter.

While I agree its a small percentage, I don't thinking those who received serious burns (including kids) nor loss of property as the result of fire will look at it the same way. Would you?

I find it interesting the reporter had to file a freedom of information act to get 800 pages of documents from the government and Apple filed injunctions each time.

Apple recalled for 1st generation iPod under pressure from the Korean government.

Isn't Sony the supplier of the batteries?
