can the nano or iphone use a Unidirectional Microphone

The type of hand help microphone used to interview people. But a cheaper one that plugs into the nano's mini jack port.

I have seen the "nano" approved mics. Is there anything special to them? Or will any mike do?

I don't think the nano can record anything. Are you talking about the iPod Touch?
