Hey, my original 20GB iPod was working fine. It's pretty old, but I've had very little difficulty with it in the past. One day it was hooked up to some speakers and instead of dying when it ran out of batteries, it started playing the music slower, all choppy sounding. After that time, whenever I plug my iPod into my PC it won't let me access it from the My Computer folder, and iTunes will not read the iPod except to tell me that it needs to be restored. However, in iTunes it will not restore, even when connected to the internet. Its memory is still taken up as though it had all my songs on it, but when it's unplugged from the computer, it shows the Apple icon and asks for what language it should use. Then when I check out the music library it appears to be completely empty. My only hint as to the problem is that when I try to access it via "My Computer" it says that there is an I/O device error. Manual resets using the menu and center buttons only take me back to the language selection screen. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The hard drive in the iPod is failing - either due to bad sectors or failing of the read/write heads.
You could buy another hard drive and replace it, if you're feeling adventurous, or buy new iPod.

HDD dead.
Apple hasn't made a 20GB iPod in years. Buy a new one or a newer used one.

Well...that's about what I had concluded, except for the face that I can still access all the menus and games and stuff from my iPod after every time its reset after disconnecting from the computer. It seems like the device itself is operating like it should. The only thing wrong with it is its interaction with my laptop and the missing songs appearantly taking up space on the Hard Drive. So, if those are the only perks to owning this iPod as it is, yeah, I'll most likely just get a new mp3 player of some sort. However, any other possibilities and or suggestions would still be appreciated.
- Thanks seanc for the input.
- turtle777...funny
- and Eriamjh, thanks for helpin' out

...Oh yeah, how much would a replacement Hard Drive on an old iPod cost in approximation vs. buying a new iPod?

Well, I don't know if you can even buy those spares. You probably needed to buy someone else's iPod that broke (like the display).
That could be cheap, if you can find it.
On the other hand, you might as well look for older generation used iPods.
IMO, it doesn't make sense to revive this iPod. Any spare parts gutted from other old iPods could fail any day.

Yup.
I could sell you original 10GB iPod 2G for the cost of shipping. I think it still works, but I haven't used it for ages.

Hm...Is there any kind of iPod "reformat" software available for download? Like, anything that is not as "Program Controlled" as the Apple software out there? Am I making any sense? LIke, is there any kind of rough, hands-on way to get my iPod back to square one?

I don't think there is. Best to remove the hard drive and smash it, if privacy is what you're worried about.

It's not privacy I'm concerned about. It just feels like Apple makes it incredibly difficult to get anything done without using their software. Like, typing with boxing gloves on...so, if there was any kind of "non-Apple" software out there that could aid in the iPod's restoration, I would have higher hopes than I currently have given the exclusive use of Apple software.

Well, you can go the PC / generic HW route, and have ten million ways of doing stuff, of which none really work. Do you prefer that ?

Restoring it is no good if the hard drive doesn't work! EVERYTHING is stored on there - not just music.
