maybe a dumb question, but i just started using separate colors for my calendars in ical, and am, of course, seeing them on my (first gen) ipod touch (v3.0).
but how do i make an entry to a specific calendar ON the ipod? i'm not seeing that option...

I haven't found a way to change colors on my iPhone either. I just make sure my iMac's iCal settings are what I want, and those colors are synced with the phone. Works great, and since I really want both versions to be the same, I see this as a VERY small (and typically one-time) inconvenience.

well at least i'm not an idiot (at least, not with this); still, seems a simple thing, when entering an event on my IPT, i should be able to select a calendar (instead of later changing this in iCal...)

On my iPhone 3.0.1, when I hit the "+" to add a new calendar event, the fifth item down is "Calendar." Selecting that allows me to choose to which of my six calendars I'd like to add the new event. I'm not sure why that would be different on an iPod Touch.
A workaround I came up with when the above wasn't an option is a calendar I call "Tentative / Alert." I use red for this calendar and set it as my default. The red stands out when I go to iCal and I can quickly see the items I want to reassign to more appropriate calendars.

Does anyone know if it is possible, in any way whatsoever, to change the calendar (i.e., the colour) of an entry once it’s created? This seems like a completely, mindblowingly ridiculous thing to leave out, but Google tells me nothing, and valiant attempts notwithstanding, I still haven’t found a way to do it.
Is it just not to be?

Changing the color/calendar of an existing item in iCal on your Mac will change the color of the item in iCal on your iPhone.

Yes, I know. But that doesn’t help much when I’m off somewhere and I create a new item on the iPod, only to find that I’ve accidentally made it in the default calendar (happens a lot—I forget to switch calendars when creating items at least half the time). I have to wait till I’m back home to change it, or delete the item altogether and create a new one in its stead. And that’s annoying.
Everything else about items can be changed on the iPod, except which calendar it’s ‘attached’ to. There seems to me to be no good reason for this, and it looks like someone just plain forgot to include that in the edit menu or something.

No, it is impossible to assign existing calendar entries to a different calendar on the iPhone/iPod touch.
I have no idea whether this has technical reasons (database structure or whatever), or is simply due to oversight, but the feature is definitely missing.

I agree with you 100% on this. If the app has the selector for new events, it should also have access to the selector to change existing events' assigned calendars. I posted a workaround which is obviously a poor substitute for the appropriate functionality.
