I went to my o2 store today to check when my contract is up and I can upgrade, and the date is November, so I can upgrade to a 3GS then. I asked about waiting til June for the next model and upgrading then, and sales guy told me that there will not be a new iPhone in June, maybe different colour 3GS models later in the year. Personally, I could smell sales bull excrement when he said that, but I could keep my 3G and go to a cheaper SIM only monthly rolling contract until I did want to upgrade.

So my options are to upgrade to a 3GS in November and have that for 18 or 24 months, or go SIM only til June, keep my 3G and upgrade to the next iPhone then. I think I'll go SIM only til June, to my mind June IS new iPhone time: original, 3G and 3GS were all June, the 3GS isn't a big jump over the 3G, mine works and I'm happy with it. The 'no new iPhone in June' comment did get my attention though even if it was with my sales garbage talk sensor.

Look after my manor, or I will bum you, literally, to death.

I'd wait. I'm also on a 3G right now, and I don't see the benefit of updating to the 3GS.

It's 100% certain that there will be new iPhones in June 10.

Don't go for a new contract until august 1.

That way, you'll actually *have* the phone when your contract begins.

I'd wait for the next gen phone in June. I'm sure it will be a minor update, but it could very well have a faster processor. The iPhone can always use more cpu power. (I'm still on a first gen phone and it can be excruciatingly slow... especially with the the 3.0 OS).

Not tragic, but I did exactly what the OP is asking.

I ordered pretty much immediately, and it arrived in late july.

So, what you're saying is you started paying for your contract in June, but couldn't use it until the phone arrived end of July ?

Yeah, that sucks.

Actually, I didn't, because I figured that would be exactly what would happen.

Which is why I didn't terminate my prior contract until July 31, and switched to T-Mobile on August 1.

Which is what I recommended doing above, for reasons which should now be clear.

So you're saying keep on rolling with SIM only contract until the new iPhone is actually available and in stock to get one?

Makes sense, and stock is going to rely on supply/demand on the release date. My bosses tried to get 3G models as soon as they could last year, and it took them a while to get a store with them in stock locally. There was a lot more buzz about the 3G last year than the 3GS this year though, probably because the 3GS wasn't a major step up.
