My iPod has suddenly stopped working when connected to my mac & iTunes. It works when not connected to my mac, but when I connect it, iTunes doesn't recognise it. It still shows up on the desktop though. I've tried it on 2 macs, my work mac and my home mac, and it's happened on both.

I've got 4000+ songs on it, and don't want to have to go through the hassle of putting all my music back on to it, if I can help it. I can't even back it up.

Does anyone know if there's anything I can do? All my software is up to date (iTunes and iPod).

It just stopped working one day half way through a song! Very frustrating

Why would you lose any songs...aren't they on the Mac you originally synced to your iPod? Not too difficult to resync them all even if it does take some time.

I've edited your title-it was pretty lame.

Have you tried just resetting the iPod? Hold the "Select" and "Menu" buttons down at the same time until the unit restarts (screen goes black, then you get the Apple logo...). That should fix the problem if it's just the iPod being stubborn-which happens sometimes.

Otherwise, as cgc says, you won't lose the music on the iPod because it's on the computer you paired it with when you got it. At worst, you'll have to sync it for a LONG time, but that's only if you have to "Restore" it and basically wipe it clean.
