All iPhones use glass screens. The only difference is that there's oleophobic coating on the 3GS.

Ah, cool. I wonder if Apple's engineers ran into the tracking problem that all those other phones were having. Apple's been criticized for using glass, but it appears to be the most accurate solution.

Using glass was one of the smartest decisions by Apple.
It just makes the phone so much more sturdy. After 1.5 years, I still don't have any noticeable scratch marks on my iPhone 3G, w/o using any protective layers or cases.

I'm not sure whether it's the glass or the tracking layer from Balda that makes the difference.
I'm inclined to believe that Balda is shipping Apple a premium product.

Glass or plastic doesn't make the difference in tracking -- iPhone's touchscreen is basically the same technology as a trackpad. Apple's trackpads have also been superior to the PC worlds' touchpads, and until recently, Apple trackpads were also plastic.
The controller chip and algorithms are what really matter.
Also, I thought the oleophobic coating on the 3GS was on the plastic housing, not the screen?

no, it's on the screen.
The difference is quite noticeable.

Yes, but my point was that in scratch-resistance, Apple also scores very high due to using glass, not plastic.
That alone makes Apple stand out from the crowd.
