I dropped my iPhone 2g and the sleep button is jammed. It is not under warranty and I already have tried to fix the problem. How much does a replacement cost? Would it be a better investment just to get the new iPhone or get a refurb of the old one? If I get the new one, would I have to get a different SIM card or would it be the same as the 2g one?

It'd probably be best to get a new one (although rumors are that a new iPhone is coming in March or May). You can just pop the SIM card right in.

I've tried to replace it for free, don't waste time saying it wasn't accidental, they send you an empty box along with a replacement iPhone and take 500 dollars hostage until they receive an iPhone that wasn't accidentally dropped or whatever.

When you get a refurb they send you a pin to pull the SIM tray out, it's pretty easy. If you buy a new one, you have to pay 500 dollars too unless you're entitled for an upgrade, and you can just pop the tray out with a paper clip.

If you have the cash laying around, just pick up a new one.
I miss the days of the G5 and XPS Pentium 4 running side by side as high-end machines.

are you saying when i give them my 2g iphone they will give me a 2g refurb for free (and the $500 will be given back)? and this is even if it isn't under warranty? also, i'm confused. do you want me to say i pushed in the button and it didn't come out or say i dropped it?

No. If your iPhone is out of warranty you'll have to buy a new one.

Even if it were under warranty they'd just keep your $500 (they charge that to your CC as a collateral when you get a replacement) once they see the phone you sent in is damaged beyond what the warranty covers (dropped for example).

I think that's a good idea. Even if the next iPhone is still a half year or so away, it's quite possible we'll learn more about the exact time frame and features soon (possibly at the Jan 27 event).

This seems to be a very prevalent topic among multiple Apple forums, and I won't try to make it harder than it is: WAIT at least until Wednesday.
