Here is my situation... At the office, we have a computer running Mac OS X Server. It serves up our calendar and contact management system. But, it does not have an internet connection. I want to connect to the server via WiFi (with an iPad or an iPhone) when I'm in the office so that I can sync my calendar and contacts with the group. Unfortunately, if I connect to the network, I lose all internet on the iPhone. Is it possible to configure an iPhone or iPad to still use 3G for Internet when connected to a WiFi network that isn't internet connected?

Yeah. Totally. How can a phone not support several different networking standards concurrently??? As we all know, every phone needs that. Where's that AAUI adapter for my iPhone anyway?

Yeah, we should be able to define a different network adapter for each individual application.

No way! Each application should be able to access all the network adapters. Concurrently. And I still want my AAUI dammit!

Is concurrent WiFi-3G data transfer possible in iPhone 4 or 3GS?
My requirement is to communicate with a web server from iPhone while transferring a binary file from the iPhone to another device through WiFi.
If it is not possible through WiFi, what about Bluetooth?

if the first cell phones were bouncing off multiple microwave signals at the same time, wouldnt you think that they have developed a much better, and faster method of data transmission? I have a family member that works for apple (production, not distribution) and he has kept me updated on all the new stuff that gets developed since the first iTouch.

Depends on the app. Some of them are able to connect through 3G, even if the iOS device is already connected to WiFi. E.g. Acrobits SIP phone.

Okay yes i will agree that there are exceptions... But i have found in general that, yes, you can connect to 3G and Wi-fi simultaneously

You actually can use both but you have to first jailbreak your iPhone. Once you have done this you can download a program called mywi. There are different versions depending on your phone, OS version, firmware version and baseband. The program allows you to use your phone as a tethered aircard via the USB plug or a single device wireless access point via Bluetooth or a wifi hotspot via the wifi antenna. Alternately you can also combine these services. I will plug mine into my laptop via the USB drive and then allow my wife to connect her computer to it via wifi and then we will both share the Internet through the phone's 3G connection.

I know this thread is old and op may have discovered the answer already. However, I am posting this just in case someone else might be looking for a solution.

The solution does not require any additional software nor require a jailbreak.
All you need to accomplish this is already built into every iPhone and iPad with 3G.

Connect to your wifi and write down the IP address your router assigned you. Then, select static tab instead of DHCP and fill in the IP address your DHCP server assigned to your iPad. Next, fill in the subnet mask but leave the rest of the fields empty.
You now have access to your wifi as well as 3G.

I ran into this issue when I wanted to use live traffic using 3G for my iPad's GPS and still connect to my GoFlex Satellite using wifi. It works extremely well.
