OK my iPhone has been working well until recently a very odd bit of behavior happens.

-The phone is fully charged.
-I make a telephone call.
-The phone rings on the other end.
-The screen on the phone goes black immediately before I can do anything or before someone answers.
-If the call goes to voicemail or I want to press the speakerphone or mute icons or hang up I can't as the screen is black.
-I press the home button and nothing happens.
-The call is actually still in progress but the home button does nothing.
-If I press the sleep button on top of the iPhone I eventually hear a "click".
-I can then press the home button and the phone wakes up.

Prior to this the screen would stay lit long enough that I could hang up if the call went to voicemail or if someone answered
and I wanted to put it on speaker or mute it I could.

Any ideas on this? I do have Applecare in case it's hardware related but it appears the home button isn't as responsive as
it used to be or the phone is flaking out a bit.

Not to condescend, but are you covering the proximity sensor with your hand while handling the phone?

If not, get that thing to an Apple Store and I'm sure they can make it right... Especially with AppleCare.

I believe the weird behavior is largely the fault of yet another inadequate case I was using with the phone. That one is going back to the store.
