Hi,

I have a question about an issue I am having with emails on my iPhone 3GS, iPad and Mac Pro (10.6.3).

My UK-based ISP is Virgin Media, who have recently handed over the email services to googlemail I believe.

Now my issue is that not all my devices receive all (POP) emails.

I seem to have nailed it down to this: if the iphone or ipad gets the email first then all 3 devices will get the email. However, if the MAc Pro gets the email first then neither iDevice will receive it.

I've checked what settings I can (and what I know about) and I am using a POP account (not IMAP) but, like I say, it only seems to happen under the conditions above. Weird.

If anyone has any ideas, that would be really great.

Many thanks in advance,

Matthew

Sounds like your Mac Pro email client is configured to remove mail from server. Set all devices to keep mail on server and you should be fine.

Better yet, see if your ISP supports IMAP.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I did check Mails settings and it was set to delete messages from the server after 30 days. I tried my little "experiment" with this ticked on and off but got the same result.

I keep thinking about going the IMAP route but can't quite figure out how to configure it all properly (my ISP does support IMAP as they now seem to be using googlemail).

Thanks again,

Matthew

Okey dokey...

So much my my little experiment proving it was the Mac Pro - it seems that it isn't.

Woke up this morning and switched on my iPhone and it picked up 5 new emails.

Switched on my iPad and got none of the 5 emails at all.

Woke up my sleeping Mac Pro and that didn't get any of the 5 emails either.

Does anyone have any further ideas? Can i use IMAP on the iPhone?

Many thanks,

Matthew

If you use the iPhone mail setup wizard, it may auto-discover your IMAP account settings. If not here is a help article from your ISP: How to use IMAP in Virgin Media Mail

Your iPhone is set to delete the emails after you get them. Turn that off.

I have one machine as the main email machine - my Mac Pro. Once email goes to that machine, it's deleted off the server. That allows me to grab mail using a mobile device and then when I get home, that's where it lives permanently.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the replies.

It turns out that none of the devices "had remove from server" (or similar) enabled.

What I needed to do was change my login name from "xxxxxyyyyy" to "recent:xxxxxyyyyy" and now everything appears to be working swimmingly :-)

I will still endeavour to explore the IMAP route as that sounds superior anyway.

Thanks again everyone,
