iPhone backup has no camera roll photos?

Stupidly, I restored my iPhone and lost all my iPhone pix. Nothing absolutely important as the important ones I already downloaded, and the iPhone 3G takes lousy pix anyway so I try never to take critical pix with it. OTOH, some were geek iPhone screengrabs and such, and it'd be nice to see what else was still there that I hadn't downloaded.

I tried iPhone Backup Extractor and it gave me the photos from an old 2008 backup, but no photos whatsoever from my last 2010 backup.

I also tried going back to a January 2010 backup in Time Machine and extracting photos from there, but again, there were no photos in there. Only my 2008 backup. Is it correct to assume that as of iPhone 2.0 or 3.0 there is no more photo backup?

Have you checked iPhoto?

Yes. Nothing in iPhoto, which isn't surprising since I don't have iTunes set to sync with iPhoto.

However, I thought that was one way only anyway, from iPhoto to iPhone.
