iPod Classic shows as windows format on Mac

I just bought a iPod Classic and connected it to my Mac Mini. It went through the registration process, etc and when it was through it listed the iPod as format:windows!
Plus, it was extremely slow synching my music.
Maybe a coincidence but the next day my yahoo account was hacked and emails saying they were sent from me were sent to people in my contact list.
Could this iPod have been a return and had a worm/virus on it or was this coincidental?
Has an iPod ever not been Mac formatted when connected to a Mac? This is very troubling.
I restored the iPod and then it formatted correctly as a Mac and the music synched quickly but I'm concerned about this.
Any thoughts?

If it was formatted windows, iTunes should have *forced* you to reformat it mac. That's very strange.

I know and why would it have been formatted windows in the first place even if itunes didn't force the reformat?
