Hey guys, I am having some problems on my 32gb 3gs which is under warranty until October.

I was wondering if I should wait until the iPhone 4 is out to take it into the store in hopes of getting one of those rather than a new 3gs.

What do you think?

May as well wait, if you can live with the problems.

I don't want to steer you wrong here, but that seems unlikely.

I don't know of any company which will give you the new model under a warrantee for an old model, while they're still manufacturing and selling the old model.

Not only will they give you a gs, it will likely be a refurb.

Yeah, I understand that. I was just considering apples tendency to cut manufacturing so that the stock will dwindle towards the release of new product. I can't find any refurb iPhones on their site.

I wouldn't think they would give me one of the 3gs that they will continue to manufacture with a smaller hard drive?

It's all guesses I suppose, just wondering the likeliness of it happening/ hoping. Ha.

I figure they're saving them as replacements.

You are absolutely right that they (should) give you a 4 before a 16G 3GS. The question will be when they run out. October seems too early, but I could be wrong.

They'll replace the 32 Gb 3GS with a 32 Gb 3GS. Apple keeps a five year stock of products for replacement. If the store doesn't have one in stock (unlikely), they'll order one.

I suspect they'll have a ton of 3GS refurbs to give you.

You CAN get the upgrade, but you have to have had issues with the device like 5 times.

I had a 40GB ipod (first click wheel, black and white screen I think). It and each replacement crapped out on me a total of 5x. By the time the last one crapped out, they had released the nice color screen 80GB ones and I got a free upgrade.

It won't happen. The 3GS is the new entry level phone, meaning they will continue to manufacture it for a while. You may as well get it fixed now.

Your odds are greater the longer away from a new product introduction you get. But with the amount of refurb 3GS in the system, you'll not have much luck I don't think.

They'll manufacture it for 5 more years (well, refurbish at least). Like I said above, Apple keeps five years backlog of products available (for some computers, longer, until labeled vintage).

It is true that Apple maintains a supply of service parts for Macs for five years past their discontinuation date. I don't think they manufacture whole computers for that long, and I don't know what their iGadgets policy is in that regard, but they do keep Mac parts in production that long.

Go ask a Genius. That's what mine told me (I asked because I saw him switch out a fifth gen iPod to a ProCare customer).

I haven't heard the 5 year rule, but I can see 3 years, plus some slack. That is long enough cover AppleCare claims, plus some extra. That would cover a vast majority of the cases. I'd think 4 years max.

Is Apple still making PowerBook G4 parts? Those continued into 2006, so that would still be available into 2011? (Granted, the Intel transition is a different beast, but parts for old computers not in production are still parts for old computers!)

Making entire units (iPod, etc) at any rate other than mass production wouldn't be cost effective. The runs would need to be sufficiently large to get the cost/unit down, and the required units drops significantly some time after a new model comes out.
Too many Apple/Mac products to even bother listing!
