How do I unlock the auto gyration on my iPad It shows it locked in the upper right corner

There's a switch near your volume button; move it to the unlocked position.

Why they did not include this in the iPhone is beyond me.

(If it is there on the iPhone 4, it’s one feature I’d really lust for)

Alas, it's not. It's still the mute on/off toggle. I agree with you - I'd find it far more useful as a rotation lock than a mute switch.

Same here. My phone is always, without exception, on mute, so that switch is fairly useless to me. They could have made it customisable, at least, so you could choose somewhere in the phone settings whether you wanted it to control muteness or gyrateness.

iPhone OS 4 has it.

double-press the home button

swipe to right

This brings up player controls for iPod/Pandora/whatever's playing, and the orientation lock button.

You can't lock it to horizontal mode, though, but that's fine by me.
