I don't want to seem overly critical here, but judging by the shadow cast by the iPad, most of the direct sunlight is being angled away from you. I'd say the sun is about 45 degrees to your left, so the brunt of the glare is being reflected 45 degrees to your right.
What this is really an example of is using the iPad in direct skylight.

Noted. I tested reading the Kindle in low light with headlamp. The light reflected off the Kindle is too much for the eyes. No e-readers can handle this. All we need to do it move around a little and the iPad will work alright even under sunlight. I should have used the word sunlight.
Still, Amazon ad makes everyone thinks iPad can not be used as e-reader under sunlight at all. I regularly read PDF books on the beach with the iPad (even with sunglasses on!). It's all about how.

You're absolutely right here. It may take a little maneuvering, but that's not too big a deal if you're ambulatory.
The notion that Amazon is trying to sell here reminds me of late-night commercials for goofy inventions where the actor pretends they're struggling with some simple activity until the invention comes along and saves them.
Extra points if they do a closed-lipped sigh which ruffles their bangs.

They aren't even really competing products. I mean, they sort of are, sort of... but not really.
