Will you put it in the used market (as you'll definitely not qualify for another subsidy)? Will you gift it? Will you keep it in a drawer, for backup? Will you attach it to your dog?

If you do do the sane thing and sell it on craiglist, will you be expecting $500, or will you let it go for $300?

Are you a bit worried about the subsidized/unsubsidized pricing schedule that Steve showed us in the ip4 keynote?..... Sorry guys, I can't find a reference for the announced price inflation schedule that SJ showed in the keynote, or was it for the iPad?

I won't do anything when the iPhone 4 white arrives.

Why would I spend hundreds of dollars just to change the color ?

I'm still waiting until February to upgrade. And I'll stick with black, thanks.

The contract on my 3GS expires in December. Unless O2 offers me a good upgrade deal, I'll keep it on pay as you go.

Nothing. I'm keeping my black iPhone 4.

I would however like to do something with my old iPhone 3GS -- PAYG voice and data. Anyone doing that on their at&t 3GS?

1. I don't have an iPhone 4. I'm still on my 3G, waiting for the upgrade.

2. If it really is delayed until spring, I won't bother. I'll just wait some more and get an iPhone 5 in the summer. By that time my contract will be up anyway, so I'll have some leverage to get a better contract through account retentions.

Actually, maybe I'll call now, just to see what kind of deal I can get, even though my contract isn't up until July.

Not a bad idea, Eug. It's looking more and more likely there isn't going to be a white iPhone 4 anyway.

When the white iPhone 4 comes out, it will be time for the iPhone 4G. . . .

I think it's more likely that we will see either an iPhone 4S or an iPhone 5 next year, depending on if they want to keep the iOS and iPhone names synced.

Don't get the iPhone 4. It will be obsoleted way too early within your new 2 year contract.

I ordered the black iPhone 4. I got sick of waiting for the white, and didn't feel like waiting until July for the 4S either. And unfortunately in Canada it's a 3-year contract.

I had called a couple of times before, but Fido wouldn't budge on the contract rules. Fido's renewals are additive. If you get a new contract, it gets added to the remainder of the old contract. So, if you have 8 months left in your old plan and get a new 3 year contract, suddenly you have a 3.67 year contract. Ouch.

So this time I called to cancel and buy out the contract. The guy wouldn't budge, except to give the cost of buying out the contract. So I called again, and got someone else who allowed me to negotiate a new contract with no requirement to add on the old contract. Rogers (Fido's parent) doesn't have these rules in the first place, but Fido does. However, Fido has Fido Dollars, and I had over $90 toward a new handset so I ended up sticking with them. Plus they dropped the monthly bill significantly. I had to go from a 6 GB data plan to 1 GB, but I have never gone over 1 GB in my life, even with heavy (for me) tethering, and most of the time I'm well below 500 MB.

I figure in 2012, I'll just do the same thing again - threaten to leave. Some Canadian company should have a 2-year iPhone deal. That company would win a lot of customers. It seems effectively it ends up being more like a 2-year contract. though anyway at the existing iPhone carriers... at least for those with enough patience and persistence to negotiate, which seems to be most of the geeks. I guess they do this because many of the non-geeks and non-persistent just suck it up and pay all the fees.

P.S. Part of the reason I jumped now was because iOS 4.2. It's a VAST improvement over iOS 4.0 on my iPhone 3G, but it's still slower than 3.1.3, and some stuff doesn't work on the 3G even with iOS 4.2. But even with 3.1.3, some things are just plain slow. Not enough CPU speed and not enough memory.

Welcome to the club, Eug. Probably a wise choice, as chances are that we'll never see a white iPhone 4, and I'd kill myself if I was still on my old 3G through next June/July.

Is 4.2 out to the general public yet?

iOS 4.2 is not out yet, but will be very soon.

Apple - iPad - iOS 4.2 Software Update coming in November

"Look for iOS 4.2 coming in November for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch."

---

Running iOS 4.0 was utter pain. Running iOS 4.2 is just slow. To put it another way...

iOS 4.2 on the 3G feels like a G4 iBook with 512 MB RAM running Tiger. Slow but usable (but not with the full feature set of what Mac OS X is supposed to be in 2010).
iOS 3.1.3 on the 3G feels like a G4 iBook with 512 MB RAM running Panther. Still slow, but a bit faster albeit much less feature rich.

I'm hoping iOS 4.2 on the iPhone 4 will feel almost like Snow Leopard on a MacBook with 2 GB RAM.

Well, it seems a huge chunk of people are running the GM already, so it not being out to the general public is somewhat irrelevant, as I doubt the final release will change much.

Is any normal mofo able to upgrade their iPhone to 4.2 before the release, or do you need developer tools?

I *think* the GMs don't require the UDID to be registered, but I'm not sure.

Ah yes I see. Hadn't noticed, since my other machines haven't prompted me for a 10.1 update yet.

I think the sane thing to do would be keep your black iPhone 4 until the next rev ( a few months later) or two iPhone comes out, not buy a new iPhone for a new colour.

Well, you can buy the parts to convert them to white iPhones, but it costs about $200. Seems a tad pricy to me.

Given that it's still buggy, I think I'll wait for the actual release (and maybe even for a week after that to see what issues people are experiencing)

You can buy white iPhone 4 clones that use actual iPhone 4 shells for about $60-80 in Shenzhen.

They re-released a newer (and final) version of the GM.

Yeah, I really wish I could get those prices here in the US. For $60, I'd swap the parts for white ones.

And, that's why I wait. The last version of the GM was the final version until a significant bug was discovered. The newer (and final) version of the GM is only final as long as no other significant bugs get discovered.

How do you know it's real shells and not cheap knock offs ?

I doubt *anything* of those phones is real.

The shells come from the same Foxconn complex. They have blank serial numbers and holes for front facing cameras even though the internals don't have one. Richard Lai of Engadget bought a shell and had an Apple Store in England replace it, Apple charges $30 to do it.
