Question: If you have multiple devices (iPhone and iPad, say, or husband/wife iPhones) do you have to download the update twice?

I just use one iTunes to do all the updates. (Assuming the devices are identical models.)

iTunes will store the ipsw, but those are specific to hardware. iTunes will download only the ipsw for iPhone 4, for example, if that's what you're updating. Different one for iPad, another for 3GS. If I want to hit direct downloads separate from iTunes, I usually go here.
If you already have an ipsw for the hardware, pressing option+update in iTunes will let you choose it, then iTunes will verify it with Apple.

Yep, I had two separate downloads for the iPhone 4 and the iPad.

Well, it depends. Doesn't it?

I mean if you have an multiple iPod Touch devices with the same model, etc. then you wouldn't have to. Seeing as you can just use the update once on both devices.
Now, if you have an iPad, and an iPhone 4 then it will of course download an update for both devices. Only because of the iDevices difference towards each other.
