Jailbraking is not as important to me as an unlocked, international iphone. Therefore, the question above is very relevant.
Anyone in the know?

I've read that officially unlocked phones remain unlocked no matter what, but I have no personal experience with it. It's entirely possible that if it's used on AT&T it could get locked to AT&T.

If you've software-unlocked your iPhone, and it's running a version of iOS you're happy with, I wouldn't spend additional money.
However, Canada iPhone from Apple is factory-unlocked and will remain so.

Yes. iPhone is enabled to work on carrier networks using GSM around the world. Because the iPhone sold by the Apple Online Store is commitment-free, you can purchase a SIM or micro-SIM card and service from a local carrier at your destination. Or check with your home carrier regarding international roaming charges.

The thing is, I'm not happy with my sub-4.2.1 iPhone: no Facetime with Macs, and no free Find My iPhone.

Thing is, to buy an unlocked iPhone in Canada, you may have to provide proof of Canadian residence, along with a Canadian credit card. Anyone know whether this is the way Apple is restricting unlocked iPhone sales in Canada?

Craigslist operates in Canada, and many of their residents are flodding the selling market in anticipation of the newer iPhone 5, which would hurt their resale expectations.
