Hello all, I am sure some of you are going to laugh at me for this, but here goes. I want to change some of the ringtones on my iPhone 3gs and I can not seem to figure it out. I see that there is a tab in iTunes 10.1.2 (17) that says ringtones, but when I try to drag something there it does not work. I am sure it is a simple process but I just can not figure it out. Please help me.

Thanks

The files need to have an .m4r extension. Here's what you do.

Step 1. Go to Audiko.net

Step 2. Do a search for any ringtone you want. Let's say "Old Spice Whistle."

Step 3. Click the "Get iPhone Ringtone" link. Go to your download folder and double click the file. The ringtone should now appear in the iTunes ringtones tab.

Slick shoes?!! Are you crazy?!!

Alternative:

Open up a new GarageBand song.

Drag any audio you want to make a ringtone of - anything at all - into the GarageBand window.

Edit, combine, fade, assemble, add effects to your heart's content, or just leave the damn thing as is if you can't be arsed.

(Max 40 seconds)

Export as ringtone to iTunes.

Only works with DRM free songs but I use this method:

How to make free iPhone ringtones with iTunes 10?

If you Jailbreak your 3GS, there are tons of ringtones available in Cydia.

Both methods work well, though the iTunes technique is less precise in terms of exact edits (at least for me). One thing to note is that the encoding scheme is critical. iPhones don't like anything that isn't AAC for ringtones. Garage Band will appropriately encode the result of editing an MP3 file when you export it as a ringtone, but you must re-encode anything that isn't already AAC in iTunes to make it work.

I've used both of these techniques to give myself several unique ringtones, so now I can use individualized rings for different people and pretty much know who's calling as soon as the phone rings. Now if I could only do the same thing for email and text alert tones...

I would rather not have to learn GarageBand unless necessary, so would it work to drag the file into Audacity sound editor, which allows very precise editing, and save as AAC? Then I'd just select the iPhone in the Finder under Export.

Honestly, watch the intro video to GarageBand in the "Welcome to GarageBand" help screen.

It's WAY easier than Audacity for basic stuff like this. Literally just drag shit in and hit the "Share" menu (and maybe adjust the yellow cycle area at the top to cut the ringtone down if you want to shorten it).

Here, from the horse's mouth:
