I have an iPhone 3GS. For most of its life, when I used headphones, I used a pair that did not have a microphone or inline controls. I have recently acquired new headphones (Etymotic HF3) that do have a microphone and inline controls, but they don't work reliably. Sometimes I plug in the new headphones, and the inline control works perfectly, and the microphone can be used. Other times, the buttons are ignored, and if I get a call I have to talk into the phone.

I'm wondering what's at fault - the phone, the headphones, or maybe something in the iOS itself. So I'm wondering what other people's experience is with headphones that have inline controls. Do they always work? Or only work sporadically?

Unfortunately, I don't have the original Apple earbuds, so I can't test. Any other suggestions are welcome.
