Consider a phone you own for real, to use this TMobile service

This is cheaper than my current plan and actually provides me with minutes, so I looked into it.
There's only edge available in my area (unsurprisingly), so the question is whether I like any of their phones and if its worth $5 a month less.

That's a great deal. I'd unlock my iPhone and take advantage of it if I weren't limited to Edge speeds due to the radio differences...

The new 4S has that TMobile frequency you need for 3G, and better reception.
How many months would be needed to payoff the Unlocked un-subsidy?

T-Mobile also has value plans that don't include the subsidy fee, and as a result are $20 cheaper per month, allowing you to get any phone you want (including an unlocked iPhone, Nexus, or anything else) and still pay less over 2 years than you would with a normal plan. $60/month for unlimited talk, text, and data. $50/month for 500 minutes and unlimited text/data. If you have a family plan, then it's $50 per line for unlimited.
It's a great deal. I really hope this AT&T merger gets smacked down by the DOJ (as it looks like it's going to). At any rate, even if the deal does go through, you can grab this plan, grandfather it in after the takeover, and hold onto it forever, since with no equipment subsidy, there's no reason to sign a new contract just to get a new phone — you can just get an unlocked one and continue on your merry way.
That's what I plan to do, anyway.

I'm looking forward to this plan, hopefully it will work on my iPhone (at 2G, I know).

I might check at an actual Walmart store; however, the plan isn't showing up on T-Mobile's site (or Walmart's) and I can't imagine the WM staff has been trained on it.

Called and spoke with TM. Tech said I have to buy a phone at Walmart. Also said I could keep my phone number.

Finished the chat. The plan referenced in the first post is for new activations only. Person said I couldn't move my existing balance (I have about a $70 credit) nor could she guarantee my number would transfer if I bought a new phone and activated it. I'm considering buying a $20 phone at Walmart and attempting the activation and then giving my Google Voice number out to everyone. That way, if I change again, no one will have to update their phone book.

Just watch out for Google Voice will not be free forever. Wholesale prices on call forwarding is 2 cents a minute and Google wants to stop paying for you.

Bought a LG GS170 from Walmart for $30. Activated it, selected the plan, put SIM card in my iPhone. Worked like a charm. New phone number but i don't care. Going to give the LG to my wife with my old SIM and number.

Depends on what part of "smart" is important to you, what size you prefer, what OS you prefer.
For the camera, iPhone 4s has the best.
For a large display you want an Android phone.
For Siri you want an iPhone 4s.
For tiles you want the Windows Phone 7 OS - and a psychiatrist...

Unlocked iPhone tomorrow, and TMobile may change plans in the US due to an unfavorable outcome in court.

I saw the article. Hope it comes to fruition and T-Mobile doesn't change their plans. I have a feeling that since it's a prepaid service, customers won't be grandfathered in if they decide to change the service. T-mobile is smart to recognize that they should do something -- they have 1,000,000 customers using iPhones on their network. Here's to hoping (wishing?) they do the right thing.

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple bought T-Mo last week for 10 figures, and you'd see the happiest Germans ever at their headquarters.
The Walmart-tMobile plan is still in stock, with email delivery (if you already have a tMobile prepaid phone I guess)
