Sort of iCloud, sort of iOS 5...

...but not entirely any of these. I need to keep my first gen MBP's iCal calendars (and hopefully Address Book and maybe a few documents) synced with my iMac at home as well as my iPhone and iPad. The problem is that it seems that "computer to iCloud" requires Lion, and Lion doesn't support my MBP. Is there a way to upload/download data to/from iCloud so that the laptop I use at work (the MBP) matches the phone in my pocket all the time? Neither the phone nor the iPad are synced to the MBP.

You can do a one-way sync using the old fashioned WebDAV support in iCal if you have a server you can use for this purpose, and the Calendar app in iOS 5 will actually query your WebDAV server rather than waiting for you to sync your calendar data via iTunes.
Other than this, I don't know of a way to do what you are wanting to do. If you discover something, let us know!

I'd be surprised if iCloud wasn't using CalDAV. Have you tried CalDAV to see if it works?

The problem is that there aren't really any good open source CalDAV servers that run on non-Apple OSes, last I checked, and from what I heard Apple's Calendar Server kind of sucks on OS X Server anyway.

As much as it pains me to say this: switch to Google calendars and contacts.
All your devices should be able to sync with those.

Thanks for the ideas. I was hoping to avoid taking a wide detour from the whole iCloud structure, and was willing to pay the $29 to upgrade the MBP to Lion, but it just won't do it. So the MBP's iCal will be synced via Google calendars, and I'll probably use Google to sync the Address Book too.
