When I asked a VZ saleswoman, she specified that a non US SIM won't be honored by the iPhone and that I would be encurring into the roaming provisions of the contract.
But the cloud was lined in faux gold. I could save money by pre-enrolling in their global package at an affordable $5 per megabyte.
Oh yeah. If you have bad credit or no credit, they will require a $400 deposit.

This should be a surprise to no one.

Didn't they say they'd unlock it after 60 or 90 days on contract, or was that debunked?

I think they said they would unlock it when you travel and then relock it upon return.

My dad is using an O2 SIM in the UK right now on his Verizon iPhone 4S. You just have to be a customer in good standing who's been with the company for more than 60 days. You can Verizon's Global Support line and they will unlock it.
