ZDNet makes a VERY compelling argument that the iPhone battery issues are not hardware probs …
Test suggests iPhone battery issue not a hardware problem | ZDNet
Would the battery problem stay with a specific handset or swap over with the software? The problem jumped handsets. Now the handset that was his development test bed (but loaded with the apps and settings from his day-to-day handset) is displaying the battery drain problem. The other handset (the one that was displaying the problem), is showing excellent battery life.

I hope they figure it out soon. My wife's 4S is now afflicted with the drain. With almost no use in a good signal area, it'll drain 70 percent in a day.

we ran a test over the holiday. both iPhone4 with latest iOS 5.0.1. synced same apps to both. power cycled both then fully charged. let them sit. one was at 99%, mine was at 78% after 8 hours of just sitting there; in the same room about 18" apart. all settings identical down to wallpaper (only difference is the phone number). both were purchased at the same time too; less then 6 months old.

i have to charge mine in the middle of the day now where prior to iOS 5.0.1 i didn't. the other phone behaves like it always did.

So it's a battery phantasm?

i think personally it is a software problem, but was unable to duplicate it on the other phone (since both used the same backup when synced). but it is a very real problem.

it is now very inconvenient for my use that i didn't experience on the shipping iOS or 5.0. as now i'm charging 2x a day (during the day and when i go to bed i plug it in so it's full when i wake up) as opposed to every 3rd day just once.
