Google iTether to learn about this app approved to the app store that allows USB tethering for a one-time fee of $15. Since there has been some difficulty with an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 this sort of thing is tempting.

I'm wondering though, do you think that whatever was done to comply to Apple's rules and guidelines would apply to Wifi tethering? Wifi tethering would be wonderful!

Judging by history, this one slipped through into the App Store and will be removed soon.

Then, a few iOS updates later, it's broken and won't work no more. $15 wasted.

From the MacRumors article:

Tether claims "We were very clear with Apple what our app did. They asked us a bunch of questions and then approved us." So it may not be getting pulled.

I don't know why Apple approved it in the first place, aside from it being perhaps a very mild form of protest against the carriers. And it's probably for the best it got pulled. It wasn't just a simple connection sharing enabler, you had to install the company's proprietary desktop client, and there was something about your connection going through the company's servers. Sounds inefficient at best, dodgy most likely and possibly dangerous. Those who want tethering unofficially are much better off jailbreaking and installing MyWi.

I already have tethering support (USB, WiFi, Bluetooth all supported), but had to get a minimum 1 GB data plan (on Fido) to get it.

It's lame that carriers still charge way more just for tethering.

I agree. From the sounds of it, the developer was quite upfront with Apple, so Apple can't claim to have discovered the App's true functionality after launch. If it was indeed some form of protest on Apple's part against the carriers, it's unfortunate that this developer's efforts ended up being sacrificed to the cause.

You can circumvent Apple all you want, but this isn't Apple's fault. It's the carriers' doing.

It probably is, but at the end of the day as users if you really wanted tethering on your Android phone you could install it without having to rely on exploiting security holes (jailbreaking). I'm a happy iPhone user, but this is a +1 for Android ownership as far as I'm concerned.
