Greetings. I have been involved in the PC side of hardware until just recently, when I traded a 1.1GHz notebook PC for an iBook (500MHz, 384MB RAM) -- I have fallen in love with OS X.
I just got the opportunity to trade the iBook away for a 700MHz iMac now, the person I'm trading with said there has been little to no experimentation with installing Linux (particularly GentooPPC) on iMacs.
Any experience or feedback on this would be appreciated -- I plan on dual booting with BootX, and yes, I've already reserved my copy of Jaguar

Thank you.

What?
No experimentation installing Linux on iMacs?

Untrue!
Now, I don't know of anyone who installed GentooPPC in my area, but I have friends running DebianPPC and SuSE.
(pitfall ahead) Gentoo shouldn't be wildly different (end pitfall)

But then, how else will you know, unless you go ahead and try?

We do have a linux forum here, linux on mac - which is really where this post belongs.

Congratulations on your iMac and experiences so far with OS X.
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

Well...hrmmmmm. This link:

http://www.imaclinux.net/plain_page....php3+record=40

States:

"As for the new LCD iMac, little is known so far about its ability to run Linux and if it does, how well it runs it.

The main problem with the new iMac and Linux is the NVidia graphics chip which has so far little support on PPC Linux. However, work is done on the NVidia drivers and having fully working and stable Linux drivers for the chips is only a question of time."

That's what my friend was apparently basing his comments on -- so, that said, anyone actually have a working install of Linux on a LCD model iMac?

Thanks!

YDL 2.3 was recently released. It appears this page hasn't been updated for it yet.

It says it doesn't work on the combo drive iMac, or am I just reading that wrong?
