I installed YDL 2.3 on Powerbook Pismo 400 and i really liked using linux, but it runs so slow. Everything takes forever to start up. Is there some setting I'm missing? Any suggestions on how to speed things up?

Thanks,

What desktop environment are you running? I'm guessing KDE 3.0 with the Liquid theme. It looks nice, but your poor Pismo and its underpowered video card will struggle with it. I've installed the same thing on a 300 MHz Blueberry iBook, and running either KDE 3 or Gnome 2 were practically unbearable.

I'd recommend installing KDE 2.0, if you enjoy that sort of desktop environment, or look at using a different window manager/desktop manager. Presently I'm running Fluxbox ( http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/ ), a minimalist but quite powerful window manager, but I like and use WindowMaker ( http://windowmaker.org/ ) quite frequently, too. AfterStep ( http://www.afterstep.org/ ) is another option, similar to WindowMaker. IceWM ( http://icewm.org ) is yet another available choice, but it looks exactly like Windows 95: good for the Windows convert, perhaps, but unpleasant otherwise. You'd be wise to uninstall KDE 3.0 entirely, as it's probably taking up quite a bit of drive space.

It seems in its effort to copy the Mac and Windows the Linux desktop movement has made its desktop environments just as bloated. Too bad the press only hits on OS X lacking support for older hardware but not Gnome 2/KDE 3.

Yeah, KDE 3.0 on a Rev. A iBook makes the OS X Public Beta look like a sprinter. Minimizing the K panel is painfully slow, taking between 3 and 5 seconds to complete, depending on what other processes are taking place at the same time (having Mozilla render a page at the same time, for example, adds 2-3 seconds to the minimization).

Gnome 2 didn't seem quite as bad, but by the time I got round to testing it, I had had enough of such environments, so didn't test as extensively.
