I tried both Mandrake 8.2 and YDL 2.3 and they both fail at the exact same point (im 99% sure). Currently I have YDL 2.3 installed.

First, specs.
PowerMac G4 733 MHz (QuickSilver), geForce 2 MX, 640RAM, 80 Gig Maxtor (hda), 40 Gig IBM (hdb), ViewSonic E70, Lite-On CDRW 12102C.

Installl goes smooth, I have my bootstrap, my swap and my root partitions, selected my monitor, res. and color depth, all goes fine.
I reboot and I'm prompted if I want Linux, Mac OS X or CDROM. I go for Linux.

Then comes trouble, at the begining, all loads [OK], then comes Welcome to Yellow Dog Linux loads some more stuff, and then, the monitor goes black.
I think it's a little before login, because I don't even have the chance to log into the system, video goes black before I'm propted for username or pass (I set it up for text).

Anyway, both distros fail more or less at the exact same point.

Anyone any ideas ?

Thanks in advance.

big update ...
I booted with linux-novideo under yaboot.
It booted perfectly.
KDE runs OK.
now, why on earth I need to do that ? beats me.
Anyway, if I launch X it runs OK, then I log out, OK, but then if I try to run X again, black screen.

Konkeror also is dead slow at startup. I mean, mozilla, yes, mozilla, starts up faster.

Anyone ?

When you reboot after the installation, you press "l" to enter linux, immediately after
you type "linux 3". Then you can login to root to make the change in the file XF86Config-4.

Change the "nv" driver to "fbdev" and the "24" to "16" Default Depth with pico,
you have to run "urpmi pine" in root. Pico not installed by default (Mandrake 8.2).
----------
to install...
install-text
(in the monitor section choose "Generic High Frequency SVGA, 1024x768 at 70Hz" if you can't find your monitor)
----------
after the installation...
"l" for linux
press tab quickly, then type "linux 3"
type "root" and your root password
urpmi pine (to install pico)
cd /etc/X11
pico XF86Config-4
(you make the changes - fbdev, 16)
you save in pico (to save a file in pico,
ctrl x, y, then enter)
exit the directory and back to root
type "startx"
----------
Hope this help! This is how i got MDK 8.2 working on my G4 867 w flat panel.

under yellow dog ...
to start first I choose Linux ... just l
then it allows me to load two linux'es: linux (default) and linux-novideo
under linux-novideo everything works fine.
And I also fixed XF8Config-4 already so X starts OK.

My concer is why I'm getting all messed up in "linux" startup (even before X loads)
and Ok with linux-novideo ....

Weird

Thanks for the help though, much appreciate it
