This installation of Yellow Dog Linux has proven to be the most successful first Linux install I've had in three years. Great graphics in X, the volume and eject buttons work (on my iBook), sleep mode works; even the shutdown command powers the machine off . I'm quite happy with it so far, but I am having a bit of a problem...

Even though I have sound, I have not been able to get the CD player (in KDE) to recognize the CD device. It's got the combo drive (CD-RW/DVD-R), and plays music CD's very well in MacOS. Dmesg returns the following address for the drive:

code:
/dev/hdb

KDE's CD player doesn't like it when I use that device address though (it crashes the player all together). Any help is appeciated.

When I try to mount the CD drive, I get the following error:

Code:
Could not mount device. The reported error was: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom, or too many mounted file systems
When I use the desktop icon to eject a CD, it works. Any ideas?

music CDs are not mountable, as they do not own a filesystem (like the ISO 9660-standard prescribes).

can't help with the KDE-issue though, is the CD playable with another player?

The Gnome player makes the disc spin, and the player display acts like it's counting down a track; but still no sound. I'm getting sound with every other event in KDE, and I played around with the sound mixer a bit, with no luck at all.

Thanks for the tip about mounting though. I didn't remember having to mount a music CD in Linux before either. I'll try downloading another player to see if that'll work.
