I've been trying for two days to install MandrakeLinux 8.2 on my iBook, all to no avail. I downloaded the ISO images from MandrakeLinux.com, burned them onto CD-R disks, and booted into the first disk. The boot went fine, just like the tutorial said, but when it came time to start installation and select a language things went sour. The process slowed down so badly that I had to wait 1/2 an hour from boot to the beginning of installation. Then the computer was non-responsive. I would tab to a field and have to wait several minutes for the choice to be highlighted. Rather than highlighted the choice went blank - just vanished like it was erased - but I took that as being selected. I hit enter and another 1/2 hour later still nothing. Anybody have tips for installing Mandrake 8.2 on an iBook?

I'm having the same problem on a Ti667. Actually, not one version of linux, that I'm aware of at least, will correctly install on this machine, a full 5 months after its introduction...

You might try Yellow Dog linux 2.3, they even sell 667mhz tibooks with Yellow Dog preinstalled! The only thing that doesn't work (yet) with Yellow Dog on the tibooks is sleep.
I've used mandrake a lot on PCs, but I prefer Yellow Dog linux for use on Macs.
EDIT: You might try verifying the ISO files with the supplied MD5 hashs. Sometimes if there is a small error in the download, the disks will seem to work fine, until you hit the corrupt data, and then it might not work at all. It can be very hard to diagnose after the fact, so its good policy to verify the ISO before you take the time to burn it to CD. That may not be the problem with your disks, but it happens pretty regularly, and might be a good thing to try.
Peace,
sam

Back to Yellow Dog Linux. Last time I got frustrated with Linux in general and erased my hard drive, then reinstalled Mac OS X and OS 9. This time I'm determined to learn something!

No deal with Yellowdog. I've installed it many, many times. I'm not saying that it won't install; I'm saying that it won't correctly install. The first problem is the lack of video drivers, which in all fairness, has kind of been fixed. But it is a royal pain to install them. The sleep issue is pretty bad on a powerbook. But the real problem is that Yellowdog crashes constantly on my 'book and has even hosed my file system so badly that I needed to reformat!
I like Linux a great deal. I even had it installed just fine on my Lombard. But I'm getting very tired of waiting for decent support on my 5 month old machine.
