I've got a copy of Umbuto (or something like that) while I was talking to a friend about playing around with Linux. My questions:

Can I have two hd in my Sawtooth and have one run OSX and the other Umbuto?

Is it possible to switch the os by a keyboard command?

I'm sure I'll think of more, but those are the two basic questions. I have no real need for another OS, but I've never got to play with a linux system, so I'm interested.

that should work with no problems...you would be able to select between OSs by holding down the option key at boot time.

So I'd have to boot into one or the other? There's no way to switch between the os while booted?

Unfortunately no. You can only run one OS at a time.

(PS: Ubuntu is an excellent choice for first playing with Linux)

No there is not, unless you run some sort of emulation or virtualization software such as Virtual PC or Parallels.

Is it possible to run two boxes and switch between the boxes using the same keyboard, mouse and monitor?

Sure, you could use a KVM. If you'd rather use a software solution you could use VNC or Apple Remote Desktop.

KVM stands for "Keyboard, Video and Mouse;" it's a device that lets you share one monitor, keyboard and mouse among more than one computer. They are useful in many situations.

in parallels, if u install parallels tools, the mouse is "free to roam" between OSes. meaning, whatever OS you drag the mouse into is the one it will control.
