HI

I am a newbie to OSX and have run into a little problem. I have installed Parallels OK with Parallels Tools installed. That appears to work fine.

Now when I try to install Boot Camp it tells me that I need to update my firmware. I have the latest firmware version installed along with the latest OSX update installed and am stuck. How do I uninstall BC to start again? What else can I do to get BC installed properly?

Another dumb question. IF I am working with a virtual HD how do I actually ensure my work is saved for real on a real HD when I shut down the XP side?

Thanks for whatever insights you can provide

I'm not sure why it's saying you need to update your firmware, but I can answer your other questions. To uninstall anything in OSX, simply drag the application to the trash. Unlike in windows, what you see as applications in OSX are actually folders containing many files that the system keeps tidy for you, so with the occasional exception of a few preference files stored in one of your library folders, the entire application is in that one icon.

Even though the parallels HD is "virtual", it does not store all your data in RAM and then write it all at once when you shut down windows. It works just like a real hard drive, except that it wraps all the data together to keep it in one "file" as far as OSX is concerned, thus enabling it to work in a different format without a separate partition. So, no need to worry about your files. Having said that, I imagine that if you broke your windows installation and had to reinstall, there would be no way of pulling your files off of the virtual HD first, since it can't be mounted in OSX as a drive.

You say you haven't installed Boot Camp, so why would you want to uninstall it? Or are you talking about just having the BootCamp program on your computer as opposed actually using it to install Windows? Are you doubly sure you have the latest firmware update?

Hello!
The firmware you want isn't the SMC one that was in Software Update. You want the one for your mac that's dated 4/16/06, 3/4 down this page http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/. That will let you use Boot Camp. Hope this helps!

The SMC update fixes issues with heat and noise on the Intel machines, and the firmware updates that don't appear in SU allow the Intel macs to install Boot Camp.
