I just received my MacBook and I installed Boot Camp so I can install XP Pro. I have a slipstreamed disc with XP Pro / SP2, but for some reason, when XP launches, it asks for a password. I didn't set one up and the one I ahve for my OSX copy doesn't work. I reinstalled XP, but I have the some problem. Any ideas?
Thanks
York

did you try just hitting enter and not typing in a password.
When I installed XP it prompted me for an administrator password and that's what I use.

Yup. Did that, but no luck.
I just went back to the machine to try again, but I see that the second dialog box says that the system cannot log me on becuase the specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.

Sounds like you are trying to login by authenticating with a domain controller. Try logging on to the local machine (should be a drop-down box on the login window).

You could also have your workgroup name entered in the domain name box. It's easy-they're right next to each other. In XP go to Start, right click on My Computer and select Properties. One of the tabs you'll get is "Computer Name;" click on it. In the middle it'll show your domain or workgroup name. If it says "domain" and you're supposed to be using a workgroup, click on the "Change" button and make the appropriate changes. It's easy.

Well, I ended up deleting the partition, slipstreamed a new copy of the XP disk, then recreated the partition and reinstalled XP. This time it worked. Looking back, I never did get the opportunity to name the computer, set the date and time... in the first install. I only remember it asking for the user name.
Thanks for the help!

Hi, I have the same problem with a clean install of XP SP2 on a HP laptop. It's a standalone machine, no network. At log-on, the 'Details' button only reveals a Shut Down option, not an option to choose a domain.
While installing, I wasn't prompted to choose between workgroups and domains, nor asked for a computer name; or it's possible I wasn't looking and it timed out and set some defaults. It did ask me for some users' names later though, so I put in mine and my g/f's.
Using Shift+F10 I have managed to get in and rummage around while the machine was 'repairing' the installation. Using nusrmgr.cpl I have confirmed there is no password on one account and one of my choosing on another. I have also discovered (using one of the other .cpl's) that the computer has the name 'MACHINENAME'.
Still no joy logging in though. I have tried the usernames:
Tom
MACHINENAME\Tom
Tom@MACHINENAME
with no success ("The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted").
Slightly more promising is: //MACHINENAME/Tom. Now I get a different error message which I don't have to hand verbatim, but it's something along the lines of: check your domain and username and password. Well I have, to the best of my abilities.
Can anyone suggest anything else?
Thanks,
Tom

Major Tom, did you also slipstream your XP install disc, and if so, with what tool? Some tools (like nlite) give you a lot of options that can goober you up pretty seriously if you choose the wrong ones together-like accidentally selecting a domain connection by entering a workgroup name in the wrong box.
